Maddalena Del Gobbo

Maddalena Del Gobbo

Cellist | Viola da Gamba Artist

"Sensuality, brilliance and an utterly perfect technique" Heinz Sichrovsky, NEWS (Austria)

Maddalena Del Gobbo first came across the viola da gamba when she entered a record shop in the heart of Vienna and was mesmerised by an enchanting sound that she would never forget. On completing her studies as a cellist, she received a MA and performed in many concert halls as a soloist and chamber musician. Though during this time, she never forgot the viola da gamba. She secretly honed her skills until deciding one day to make the early instrument her focal point and dedicate her life to baroque music.

Maddalena was born in Italy and started studying music at a very early age. At the age of four, she began learning the piano and gradually added the cello and voice to her musical education. At thirteen. her special talent took her to Vienna, where she studied the cello at the Konservatorium Wien Privatuniversität.

Her recent performances include appearances at the Musikverein Vienna, the Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik, Barocktage Melk, and broadcasts for BR (German TV).

In 2014, her CD Viola D ́Emozione for Archiv Produktion/Deutsche Grammophon was released. This debut release is a collection of German music for viola da gamba and harpsichord from the 18th century. 2016 saw the release of her second album Henriette - The Princess of the Viol (French music for Princess Anne Henriette of France), and her third album followed in 2019, again for Deutsche Grammophon, entitled Maddalena and the Prince - a collection of music written for Prince Esterházy - that was released worldwide.

In 2020 Maddalena was nominated for the ICMA and the Opus Klassik. She is founder of the ensemble Ad Cor, specialising in ensemble music for and with the viola da gamba, and the Artistic Patron of Scandinavian Cello School (a foundation which supports, educates and promotes young cellists).
